About The Author: John Clark Marshman (1794–1877) was an English journalist and historian known for his significant contributions in India. He held the positions of editor and publisher at the Calcutta-based newspaper Friend of India and was associated with various other Indian publications. In April 1818, Marshman, along with his father Joshua Marshman, initiated the first monthly magazine in Bengali called Digdarshan. This publication aimed to provide educational information for the youth. Shortly after, they also launched the weekly news magazine Samachar Darpan, which was one of the first two Bengali newspapers, the other being Bengal Gazetti published by Ganga Kishore Bhattacharya in the first half of 1818. Marshman's notable works include "The Life and Times of Carey, Marshman and Ward," a comprehensive account of the lives of William Carey, Joshua Marshman, and William Ward, key figures in the Serampore Mission. He also authored "Memoirs of Major-General Sir Henry Havelock," a biographical work on the military leader. Furthermore, he wrote "The History of India from the Earliest Period to the Close of Lord Dalhousie's Administration," providing a historical account of India until the end of Lord Dalhousie's tenure. Additionally, he produced the "Guide to the Civil Law of the Presidency of Fort William," offering insights into the civil law system in the region of Fort William.
